Hi, my name is Vanessa Luquin and I am from Live Oak, California. I graduated from Live Oak High School in June 2016 and I am currently a senior at California State University, Sacramento. Both of my parents have worked as seasonal workers for most of their lives. My mom's education stopped around middle school and my dad’s education did not go past his freshmen year of high school. No further education was later added to either of my parents. Currently, my dad is piking kiwis and my mom is working at an organic walnut company. Although my parents are divorced, they still do their best to help me within their means. I believe that I am a good investment because after I graduate I plan to give back to my community and become a positive role model to others. My freshmen year at Live Oak High School, I got suspended and my GPA was extremely low. From the support of the staff at LOHS I was able to become a better student. Here at Sacramento State University, thanks to the College Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP), I completed 40 hours of community service my freshmen year and I obtained an internship at the Sacramento Zoo. My goal one day is to be able to contribute to Live Oak High School and programs like CAMP and help students who want to further their education.
