My parents have been dedicated to the agriculture industry in the small town of Le Grand, California for as long as I can remember. My father came to California at the age of 17 and became experienced in harvesting vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, and almonds. I remember seeing my father leave home as early as 4 A.M. to get to work on time and my mother waking up at least an hour before to pack everyone's lunch for the day. My mother would have to wake my sisters' and I up early as well to comb our hair, feed us, and take us to her close friend's house for her to walk us to school. She would later head out to work and there would be times where we would not see her very much due to the fact that she worked night shifts. My mother was a seasonal worker at a packing shed where she began sorting tomatoes. Even after 24 years, she has still continued to work there every year. At the age of 16, I occasionally began working during the summer picking figs and I realized how hard of a job it is for not just my parents or myself, but any farm worker. This is the reason why I have chosen to attend college and work towards a degree in Mental-Health Counseling. I feel that I would be a good investment because I am dedicated to my schooling and I challenge myself to do the best of my ability. Another reason I would be a good investment is because I want to continue to develop as a professional and receiving any sort of help would highly benefit my future plans as I further my studies.
