My name is Maria Torres Lemus. I work in the fields of the Central Valley, CA because it helps support my academic expenses. I am not ashamed of working in the fields; I feel extremely happy to say that I have worked so hard to stay in school and that every sacrifice I have made is paying off. Even though my economic situation is challenging I am able to balance work, school, and extra-curricular activities such as being part of a theatrical club. For the school year 2015-2016, I will be attending Fresno State as a graduate student working towards completing a Masters Degree in Counseling with the Option in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling. In May of 2015 I completed a Bachelor's degree in Social Work with a double major in Spanish with a GPA of 3.8 In June of 2004, I migrated to the United States along with my family without knowing any English and having no idea of what college was about. I was 15 years old when I came to the United States, and it was very difficult for me to learn a new language and adapt to a new system. At first, my self-confidence was really low; I thought I was not going to make it this far. Fortunately, I had a great mentor and really supportive parents who pushed me forward in accomplishing my dreams. I'm a dreamer and I believe everything you dream of can become our reality if we work hard. Now my dream is to obtain my Masters degree and work as a Mental Health Clinician.
