I am Ruth Daniela Gamez. I am 21 years old and I am originally from Guanajuato, Mexico. When my parents decided to migrate to the states we came to Napa Valley, Ca. Napa became my home ever since. Its beautiful grape fields made me fall in love with Napa or also known as the wine country. My parents and most of my family have worked in the vineyards for many years. I myself had the opportunity to work in the fields this past summer. I needed to work as much as I could to save up for college because this summer I transferred from Napa Valley College to the University of California Davis. I knew it was going to be more expensive than community college, so the best option I had was to work in the fields. It was very difficult labor, and I learned a lot more than I expected. It also made me appreciate my education, and it made me realize that I don’t want to continue to work in the fields my whole life just like my family, and that is why I want to pursue my higher education.
My dream is to become a teacher in the future. Right now I am working on my Communications major, with two minors: Chicano/a Studies and Education. I love serving my community through different organizations such as Puente Program, the Puente Club, Jesed (Catholic Youth Group of Napa), DREAM team, and Latinos Unidos del Valle de Napa y Solano. Since I am very involved in my community in Napa I would like to also get involved now here in Davis, and that is why I just joined SPEAK, and also I plan to join more clubs and non-profit organizations to keep on giving back to my community.
